The project began with the idea of employing industrial design thinking into film production through the design and construction of sets, props and costume for a short film of our own making.
Over a period of four months, two other designers from my class and I designed, built and helped film the set, miniature, props and costume for the short film "Space Trash Men'. The film was a comedy about two men with conflicting personalities on a routine trash dump mission to outer space. We brought in film school students to orchestrate the elements of the film around the art department.
With the set in particular it was important to us that in order to achieve authenticity on film that the set was treated as a real functional space ship interior and that it was approached holistically, drawing it back to questions such as 'what do two men really need to live in a confined space for 3 months?'. We addressed issues such as claustrophobia and exercise alongside making it a functional film set with removable panels and walls.
